Hello! Prepare yourself for a long stream of photos! The last weeks of school are so busy- Let's go back to Unified Day. Unified Day is a day when all of the self-contained classes get together to enjoy a track and field event. The kids all participated in the long jump, frisbee and ball throw, and 50 yard dash. Next up... a bunch of random photos! Click on them for captions! 5th grade camp! We took two kids to 5th grade camp this year- it was my first time at camp and the first time that any of the kids from our program have participated. It was a big leap forward in the entire team's efforts to continue to make inclusive experiences the status quo at Wines. I was so proud of both boys for stepping into a brand new situation, knowing next to nothing about what to expect, and really rising to the occasion. Next up... Blue Heron Bay! Every year the PTO sponsors our field trip to Blue Heron Bay, a splash park at Independence Lake County Park. It was perfectly hot and the kids were all willing to get wet, making it a fun day. We took along 6 peers who participated in Lunch Bunch this year and entered the raffle at the Country Fair to win the opportunity to go with us. I do not have lots of pictures because I was busy having fun on the waterslides as well. Another great happening was a spur of the moment decision to do a Readers Theater production of The Cat in the Hat. I unfortunately do not have a lot of photos, but everyone played a role- some small, some big. From helping with the invitations and "set" design, to highlighting scripts, to reading parts. It ended up being a fun project to work together on the last 2 weeks of school. We had the kids choose some friends from their gen ed classes as well as Margaret, Ms. L, and Mrs. H and her crew to be the audience and we staged our final production on Wednesday. Margaret caught a great deal of it on video- she said she would try to do a private youtube link. It will definitely live on in my memory as all great theater does! Click on the photos for captions. The last day of school Mrs. H and I held our very first "Paper Plate Award Ceremony." Everyone is recognized! Everyone is celebrated! It was a hit-! Kids and adults alike had a fun time celebrating each other. Which brings me here to these three amazing faces... and the end of an era in their lives and mine! I have been at Wines for five years now and have been lucky enough to have these three boys for the last four. They are more or less my first graduating "class" from Wines and it is difficult for me to imagine Wines without them. Being a special education teacher is a bit of an intense experience at times and I have never been very good at not investing my heart into my job- your children will always hold a place there. I've sent enough kids on to middle school by now to know that I will smile when I remember the great days AND the not so great days (and even the days when tennis shoes go flying over the fence towards M-14...). I can't wait to hear about all their future adventures. Click on pictures for captions.
