Week 3! It flew by! This week we talked a lot about Staying on Task. We learned that staying on task helps our classmates and friends also stay on task. Another message was that sometimes school is fun and sometimes it might be a little boring, but that it is still important to stay on task. Staying on task makes us feel proud of ourselves. We are also constantly reviewing and reinforcing following our five classroom rules as well as making smooth transitions between activities. Our Behavior Basics are off to a great start and I am happy with the positive changes we are seeing. Here are some other happening from around the classroom this week. Jack received a brag tag for volunteering to be a good friend to help a student who was at OT do her assignment. Kayla painted my nails after choosing some green nail polish from the prize box. Corbin amazed us with his floor puzzling skills. We had fun in Adapted PE with Ms. Bailey- and Joey is racking up some pretty cool tattoos from the prize box. Kayla and Ella both participated in Big Buddy/Little Buddy with their gen ed classes. Sasha has been trying out robotics with 5th grade PLTW. The days feel busy and productive with lots of (smooth) transitions. Now if only the Fall weather would return...

We have completed our first full week of school! This week's "Behavior Basic" was Smooth Transitions. Transitions are a biggie in 114! We make a lot of transitions every day. We defined a transition as a "change in activity." Use this language at home with your kids when you are getting ready to make a change in activities. We talked about why transitions can be hard (have to stop an activity, may be confused by what to do next) and ways that we would help them. Three of the strategies we used are timers, schedules, and giving warnings. These are strategies that could all be easily implemented at home for both difficult and easy transitions. In science we have been talking about the three main types of clouds: cumulus, cirrus (not SERIOUS), and stratus clouds. We talked about the different characteristics and made posters to hang in the hallway outside our classroom. Next time you are outside with your child do a "Cloud Check" and talk about what kinds of clouds you see! We had our first two music classes with Ms. Glaser this week. The kids are fortunate to receive instruction from two different music teachers throughout the week. The teachers have very different styles and do different activities, but both classes are a hit with all the kids in Room 114. We are lucky, indeed! Here's some other fun shots from the week!
Hello! Welcome and welcome back! I was excited to see our returning students on Tuesday and welcome Kayla and Jack to Room 114 at Wines. For those of you who are new to us, this blog generally serves as a recap of our week. I try to take as many pictures as I can to share and some weeks I do better than others. I will try and post weekly, but it is occasionally a bi-weekly update. Some weeks are slow news weeks and some are intense with a lot to share! We are starting out with a superhero theme this year. The kids all made a superhero to hang in the classroom. The kids will also have the opportunity to earn "Brag Tags" that they will hang on a lanyard and be able to wear and feel proud of themselves. Brag tags can be earned for a number of things including a positive attitude, super sharing, having a great reading lesson, doing a great job in music class etc. I am starting a new curriculum with the class this year called "Behavior Basics." Each week we will have a behavioral expectation that we will be teaching. This week we learned our 5 Classroom Rules. Every day we will do a different activity that helps teach and reinforce the expectation. On Friday one of the activities we did was to give compliments to our classmates for following the five classroom rules. At the end of the day the kids and teachers read our compliments out loud to the recipient. You should see these come home every Friday- lucky for me, Jack's missed his backpack so I can share a photo of it here!! Our week was full of learning new routines, meeting new friends, and reconnecting with old ones. Have a great weekend everyone- excited to see what week 2 will bring!
