We continued on with our story form/comprehension activities during our literacy group. We finished Goldi Rocks and the Three Bears by writing a summary of the story and learning two new vocabulary words: slumber (to sleep) and shock (a surprising experience). We also introduced two new story elements: the wish in the story, and the problem. The kids are becoming more secure in the concepts of characters and setting. As you are reading with your kids see if they can identify the characters (people and animals who act out the story) and the setting (time and place).
This week was gray...gray...gray and muddy...muddy...muddy! I am ready to look out the window and see either some sun or some snow so we can enjoy the winter weather a little more. We continued on with our story form/comprehension activities during our literacy group. As you are reading with your kids see if they can identify the characters (people and animals who act out the story) and the setting (time and place). Other highlights of the week (pictured below) included participating in extra specials during lunch recess (Legos and crafts), new token boards with favorite characters, sharing projects with general education classes, becoming more independent in our after lunch math rotations, earning five star days, learning new dances on GoNoodle, and the discovery of how much fun it is to do our work on the floor!! Whatever it takes!! Upcoming this week: we start a new book for literacy group- Goldilocks and the Three Martians and have our first class with the 4th Wall Theater Company. Can't wait!!

...and we're back! I feel like it took us a few days to get back into the swing of things, but we're here now! We welcomed our new student teacher, Rachel Lewandowski (Ms. Lew!) who will be with us for just ten weeks. She's working hard to learn our routines and getting to know all of your amazing kids! I've been working to implement the Project Read story form training that self-contained teachers recently participated in. We will be working on defining and identifying parts of a story (currently working on characters and setting), characterization (what a character does and says), vocabulary, and learning how to summarize a story. We started with Goodnight, Gorilla. The kids are learning to use symbols to identify and mark the characters (people or animals that act out the story) and the setting (time and place of the story). This past week we started with the book Goldi Rocks and the Three Bears and will continue with some other parodies of the classic three bears story throughout January. Other January happenings have included the MLK day assembly, floor hockey season in PE class, and extra specials during lunch recess (some have attended crafts and legos so far!) Coming up in February, the 4th Wall Theater Company will be coming to Wines every Friday afternoon to play some theater games with the kids and help us learn a short play to present to all of you! Our production will be Friday, March 10 at the downtown library. I do not have the time yet, but will let you know as soon as I do. I hope that you will all be able to take a short break from your work schedules to join us!
