I like to incorporate the kids' interests as much as I can into our activities as it increases enthusiasm and participation. Several of the kids were really interested in the flags that were hanging in the entry way when Wines was preparing for International Night. I designed some group lessons where we are talking about different countries, practicing our shapes, colors, vocabulary, listening comprehension and global awareness. Not bad for a 30 minute lesson. We have "visited" Great Britain, Italy, Germany, France, Iceland, and the (fictional) island of Sodor (guess whose idea that was!) thus far. With each lesson we watch a short 7 minute video from the "Travel Kids" youtube channel to learn about a famous place or landmark in those countries. I love how Joey colored in France to match the pattern of the French flag. Clever kids!
We are two weeks past spring break with just seven weeks to go. This is the home stretch! We have been busy learning, having fun, enjoying the weather outside, and have started our state testing the past two weeks. Welcome back! I am so relieved that spring is here-! It was great to see all of the kids back after Spring Break. Sounds like everyone had some memorable adventures. Now that the weather is a little nicer, we can sneak in some extra time outside! I have a few pictures to share from the week before Spring Break. Our 4th graders went on a field trip to the Kids Fair on the U of M campus. They had been corresponding with pen pals all year and Ian was even able to meet his pen pal and have lunch with her. The Under the Sea/Finding Dory theme was a huge hit with Sasha and Ian was crowned the winner of the 4th grade dance-off. It was quite the send off into Spring Break. This week during our morning group, we started to learn a little about different flags and the countries they belong to. The first flag we talked about was the flag from Great Britain. We also learned about two places to visit in England: Big Ben and the London Eye. On Friday we had an assembly to celebrate Wines' donation to Food Gatherers as well as the kids meeting their goal for March is Reading Month. Thanks to everyone for sending in your contributions and reading logs. At the assembly the kids were surprised by two University of Michigan basketball players. (If you are a fan perhaps you will recognize them!) Yufan was our Power Paw winner so he got his picture taken and also won the honor of getting to throw a pie in Dr. DeYoung's face. That will be happening in June! Can't wait! All the kids seem to be enjoying the new art station. Painting has been something that everyone has enjoyed. Here's one by Yufan!
