This week we talked about "Cleaning Up After Myself." I'm not sure this one really sunk in. We'll keep working on it. In other news, we have started talking about the water cycle-! We have 4 big vocabulary words- precipitation, collection, evaporation, and condensation! I thought the cyclical concept of the water cycle might be difficult, but after the first couple of lessons I am feeling optimistic! We definitely had lots of precipitation this week and plenty of chances to talk about it! We started a new class wide reinforcement (and math lesson in disguise) plan on Friday. We are going to earn and count 100 5-Star Days. How many days will it take for us to reach 100 5 Star Days? Stay tuned! Just a few other pictures to share this week!

Our Behavior Basics focus this week was dealing with changes in schedule. Changes happen all the time, but if we remain calm, that makes the change easier to deal with. Sometimes we know when there will be a change, and sometimes changes are a surprise. As much as we all enjoy our predictability and routines, we also have to practice how to handle changes. I told the kids that I was surprised to find a big change when I arrived at school on Monday morning. The upper el playground had been disassembled and removed over the weekend. We would have to come up with some new things to do at recess time. Popular choices included bubbles, balls, swinging, and even some dancing. We are all excited to see when they will start putting together the new playground. I love reading the compliments that the kids write each other every week. They each choose who they want to write to and I've been impressed about how they are putting thought into what they write. They have also started reading their compliments to each other and it's fun to see how proud of themselves they feel for receiving the compliment. Enjoy the rest of this week's pictures! Not pictured but also notable- we started our first chapter book as a read aloud, so I am curious to see how that goes. We also started talking about the water cycle in science, introducing four pretty big vocabulary words: precipitation, collection, evaporation, and condensation. We have a 10-15 minute choice time coming back from lunch that helps the kids settle into the afternoon. Most of the kids choose to draw on paper or a white board and I find some of the best creations during this time. I loved this letter from Joey to Ella (he did clarify that it was himself being swept away in the tornado...). Choice time is also one of the only times that silly scripting is allowed and Jack and Sasha collaborated on the white board with a creation of a favorite silly script. I also located some pictures of Joey from the Runathon. I had tossed my phone to my husband to take pictures and forgot that my 5 year old, Oliver, was taking pictures (HUNDREDS!!!) on my husband's phone. Glancing through those, I was happy to find photos of Joey!
The week leading up to Runathon is always a little chaotic, but we rose to the challenge. We had a few kids and teachers participate in dressing up for the spirit days. We saw some cute pajamas, some crazy hair, and some favorite team spirit on Thursday. Our behavioral focus this week was using school tools appropriately. We learned how to carry our scissors while walking, to put the lids back on our markers and glue sticks, and to not press down too hard so we don't break our pencils, crayons, and markers. We talked about what to cut (only paper!) and what not to cut (our hair! our clothes!). And finally... Runathon! The weather was not as beautiful as it could have been but it was a fun morning nonetheless. Thanks to everyone who came out to join us and participate!
The first week of October went well. This week we talked a lot about Raising My Hand. We learned that we can raise our hand to ask for help, to ask a question, or to ask if we want to do something. When you raise your hand, you have to wait for your teacher to call on you. If we raise our hand instead of calling out our teacher's name, our friends will be able to concentrate on their work. We also learned that concentrate means thinking. We kept pretty busy last week following our regular routines. We had peers from Mrs. Shanteua's 3rd grade and Mrs. Fisher's fourth grade in our classroom as well, so we are working on maximizing our inclusion and reverse inclusion times as well.
We are excited for Runathon this Friday, the Spirit Days, and all the fun and excitement of the upcoming week. Hello October! It was another busy week in Room 114 with a lot to do. Our Behavior Basics focus this week was "Following Directions," We talked about following directions from our teachers (and parents!). We talked about who gets to give directions in school and who does not. The take home message was that teachers give students directions to help them learn and also to help students be SAFE! On Friday we all filled out our compliments! Here's a few compliments from teachers and students! In science we are continuing to learn about weather and we will be starting to look at the water cycle as we move further into October. Ask your kids about the four types of weather tools we are learning about (wind sock, thermometer, rain gauge, and barometer) as well as four types of extreme weather (tornado, hurricane, earthquake, flood). We have also thrown in a couple review lessons about seasons and added those to our science journals as well. We also learned a new type of cloud this week: nimbus! Tons of other happenings... check out the rest of the pictures! I'm excited to see what October brings!
