Hello everyone! We had another great week in Room 114. I chose to do a Halloween book for the last week in October. We read Room on the Broom and did some witch-related activities. We wrote sentences with vocabulary words from the story. We also thought of some other animals that might ride with the witch on her broom and some descriptive words to describe the animals. Here's some examples: I don't have a lot of pictures to share this week- we were pretty busy! Will hopefully get lots of fun Halloween pics tomorrow! Until next week!

Runathon week is always one of my favorites at Wines! Thanks for sending the kids in their pajamas, mismatched socks, and favorite team gear! This week we did read a third "I Know an Old Lady" book. This week she swallowed a chick and many other items that led to her building an Easter basket at the end of the story. (Think Spring, everyone!!) Ms. Glaser has also been reading some of the "Old Lady" books with the kids during music class! Here's a couple pictures of us sequencing the story this week! During science we did a couple of experiments. One involved comparing how many seeds were inside three different apples. All three apples had about the same number of seeds. We also did an experiment where we built a ramp and adjusted the height to see if a higher ramp would make the objects go down faster. (It did!) The kids had fun racing lots of different things down the ramp including pencils, trains, toy cars, and skateboards. Here's a few other shots from the week. Click on the pictures for captions! Here's the Runathon pics! It was just a little chilly but everyone participated and had fun! Thanks to Yufan's dad and Ella's mom for coming out to cheer! Every year I think I should get a group shot, but for various reasons it never works out! We had Ian take a few pictures of a small group of us. We didn't get the shot, but had fun in the process!
We had a great week in Room 114! We read our second Old Lady book of the month- There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Shell. We sequenced the story every day as a group. We also worked on identifying some contractions, reading sight words, and did some writing about seagulls. In science we did an experiment about Dancing Raisins, talked about living/non living, and read a book about a boy who did an experiment planting seeds. On Friday, we read a News-2-You paper about the World Series (Gray family is rooting hard for the Cubs!! This could be the year!!). On Friday afternoon we had the Runathon kick-off assembly. The kids all loved the drum line. If the pledge envelope did not come home on Friday in your student's backpack, please look for it tomorrow! The Runathon is always one of the most fun days at Wines- lots of school spirit and sportsmanship! Here's a round up of photos from the week! Thanks so much to Yufan for turning 11 (What???) and his family for hosting a super fun bowling party this afternoon! It was fun to see (almost) everyone there- if you weren't there, we missed you! Also congrats to Yufan for killing it by scoring a 91! I am so thankful for the opportunity to know you all!
It was a busy week and I have lots of pictures to share! This week we started our October theme... There was an Old Lady! This was a favorite theme from last year so we are reading some different Old Lady books this year. First up was There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Clover. Every day we read and sequence the story up on the white board. This week we also created our own books of the story, practiced some compound words (putting together and taking apart), and sorting numbers into the categories of odd and even. We used a "Spin a Wheel" app on the iPad to complete a graph to see which picture the wheel would land on! (I see many more "Spin a Wheel" activities in our future- the kids love this app!!) Our science unit in October is about the scientific process so we will be completing a few science experiments this month. Some of them will be from our Unique Learning curriculum and some will be ones that I have created. On Friday we did a magnet experiment. (Click on the pictures for captions!) We had two field trips to Bird Hills for various 3rd and 4th grade classes. Beautiful weather for both! Here are the rest of this week's photos!
It's October!! Our last week of September felt a bit long as if felt like most everyone was under the weather! We made it through and I hope everyone was able to get a couple days rest over the weekend. We finished up our 5 Little Monkeys theme with our last story, 5 Little Monkeys with Nothing to Do. Sasha pointed out some inconsistencies in the stories to us (Why do they have bunk beds in some books, and one big bed in others??) and we sequenced and summarized the story. Our social studies unit of "working together" ended with some graphing about our favorite kind of spread to put on bread (I don't quite get it either...). The kids were able to go around and ask other teachers and friends the question so we could have some additional data. Strawberry jam for the win!! In October we will be reading the "I know an Old Lady" books and doing a science unit about the scientific process. We will do some (hopefully) fun science experiments on Fridays throughout the month of October. Here's some photos of other happenings throughout the week- including some fabulous art work, gym, library, music, sharing some photos in 3rd grade, and working in the lunchroom! Hope the weekend has been great for all of you-!
